Polystyrene concrete for floor screed

Polystyrene concrete is a kind of lightweight concrete and is a composite, which contains Portland cement, mineral additives (sand), porous filler in the form of polystyrene granules (better known as “foam”), including additives, air. This building material without problems amenable to shrovelling, which is considered a particularly important property during the laying of communication networks. Excellent thermal insulating properties of polystyrene concrete, and its elastic characteristics provide this material high demand for heat insulation works in the system “warm floors”.

Leveling screed with polystyrene concrete floors between the floors and floor surfaces of the premises is particularly popular among builders and design engineers. To date, screed based on polystyrene concrete undeniably competes with other insulating materials for pouring the floor surface.

What advantages can be noted

When erecting buildings, leveling floor screed is usually performed with cement-sand mortar with a thickness of up to 50 mm. To ensure sound and thermal insulation in this case, additional layers of insulation are used. On the floors perform a layer of waterproofing. And to avoid cracks, such a screed is reinforced with a mesh. When using polystyrene concrete to level the floor in one layer, all the above problems are simultaneously eliminated, in view of the fact that the screed based on polystyrene concrete performs the functions:

  • leveling layer;
  • sound insulation (50 mm screed provides sound absorption not less than 15 dB);
  • insulation.
  • in some cases, the screed based on polystyrene concrete can replace the coating of waterproofing.

Applying polystyrene concrete floor leveling for heat and sound insulation can significantly reduce the load on the structure of the building, including the foundation base. This fact can have a direct impact on the price of the building structure.

Why is this building material so popular?

From all of the above, you can understand why polystyrene concrete is so popular for the arrangement of heat and soundproofing screed, carried out on the overlaps of residential premises. This leveling of the floor is usually made to a thickness of 60 mm and arranged in one layer. Leveling layer for the floors on the first floors and basements, as a rule, has a thickness greater than indicated, it can reach 100 mm. and at the same time have a density up to D400.

Lightweight concrete is very frost resistant, has a homogeneous structure and has a high durability. The levelling layer is laid evenly on the surface and can be made with two-millimeter gaps under a 2-meter lath. It is an ideal base for tiled and parquet floors, linoleum floors. The surface of the floor before the device of the leveling layer should be cleaned from various contaminants. Only high-quality materials are used for the preparation of the mortar. After the mixture applied to the surface hardens, a solid and reliable coating is formed.
