How to make a warm floor without a screed

Innovation is becoming more and more common, and nobody is surprised by heated floors. Now to lay a heated floor is absolutely not difficult, and you can do without the help of professionals. There are only two types: “dry” – a warm floor without screed, and “wet” – poured with a concrete screed or tile adhesive. When choosing a warm floor, note that the drying time of concrete is 3-4 weeks, so the “wet” floor is done much longer. Another of its significant disadvantages is the difficulty in disassembly, because in case of any malfunction will have to break the concrete screed, while with “dry” heating disassembly is very easy.

Floor without screed comes in two types

  • Water – which is a loop of pipes through which hot water flows.
  • Electric – using electric heating elements.

Electric heating system

  • Cable – shielded cable is used as a heating element.
  • Rod – heated by carbon rods.
  • Foam – heats the floor with thin, infrared elements.

Water heating system

Water underfloor heating without a screed can be connected to central and autonomous heating. It can be “comfort” and heating. Heating is put as the main heating system, and “comfort”, implies the presence of the main heating, to heat only the floor and has a smaller thermal capacity. The water system consists of several layers:

  1. The bottom layer is made of foam or wood. It is laid on the “rough” floor and heating pipes are laid on it. You can make indentations in the foam plastic with a thermal knife. The wooden layer is laid in two steps, first you lay a solid layer, and on top the boards are screwed with self-tapping screws to get a recess for the pipes.
  2. Next lay the heat distribution plates of aluminum or galvanized steel. In them put the pipe – the main element of heating. For the water system, you can use copper, polypropylene and polyethylene pipes.
  3. The final layer – moisture barrier. It is necessary to protect the flooring from moisture. Moisture-resistant gypsum board or cement-bonded board is suitable for this. The flooring is laid on top.

Electric heating systems

All electric systems are installed in the same pattern. Thermal insulation material is laid down, heating elements are placed on it, which are covered with a polyethylene film from above. It remains only to put the floor covering. Do not put heavy objects of furniture on the cable floor, as this can disrupt its electrical wiring, and if the cable breaks, the whole system breaks down. Rod flooring is better than cable flooring because its rods are connected in parallel and because of this, if one element is damaged, the others continue to work. Infrared film elements are considered to be the most powerful electric heaters. They are also connected in parallel and if one fails, the others will heat the flooring. Infrared rays do not dry the air and heat the room evenly. Installing underfloor heating is expensive, but well worth it.
