Every motorist wants to have a separate house for the car, regardless of where you live. For many, the only way is to build it yourself. In addition to the walls, roof and gates, the key step in its construction is the floor. In this article we have tried to outline our thoughts and experiences how to make a concrete floor in the garage with their own hands.
Concrete floor in the garage, as well as the other elements of the structure, must meet certain requirements:
- Great durability;
- Wear resistance. It must keep its surface intact during use;
- Resistance to moisture. Various liquids can be spilled from a standing vehicle and during various works;
- Chemical resistance. It must withstand contact with fuel, oil and other chemically active liquids.
Preparation for concreting
Before pouring the floor in the garage it is necessary to prepare. For the base you can choose several options. Well tamped gravel with a layer thickness of up to 15 cm or sand will do. The next layer is waterproofing, which is used as a roofing felt, polyethylene film (several layers) or gidrostekloizol. Now consider in detail each step, how to get a concrete floor in the garage.
Creating the foundation
Before pouring the floor in the garage, it is necessary to perform excavation of excess soil. It is selected over the entire area. As a result will come out a depth in the region of 0,5-0,9 m. After completing all the work, the floor should be about where the soil was originally. At the bottom of the excavation is poured crushed stone height of about 0.5 m. On top it should be leveled and a little tamped. What is the purpose of this first layer? With its help the bearing capacity of the top layer increases. In addition, it allows you to drain excessive moisture from the cushion. On top of the gravel you should put the sand with a thickness of about 15 cm. The surface is leveled. On top of the sand is watered with water. In this way a dense building pillow is created. Why is such a composition of the base needed? There are several reasons for this:
- The mechanical composition of the material allows the top layer to evenly distribute its load on the ground;
- The soft composition of the top layer makes it easy to achieve the correct level;
- There will be minimal shrinkage during pouring;
- This composition of the cushion gives the entire structure rigidity and strength;
Building regulations do not stipulate perfect flatness of the surface. Horizontal deviation is allowed in the order of 20 mm. For accurate alignment, you can use rails. They are installed on the building level and the surface of the sand is leveled on them. It is possible to use wooden bars. After completing the operation, they are removed, and the holes are filled with sand.
Waterproofing the floor in the garage
On top of the filtering cushion, it is necessary to put a layer of waterproofing. The simplest option is to use polyethylene film, which is inexpensive and is available everywhere. The thickness should be 0,25-0,3 mm. Laying is carried out with overlapping with a grip of about 15 cm. The entire area is covered in such a way in separate strips. Segments of the film are fastened with adhesive tape on the basis of polyvinylchloride. The surface of the resulting cloth is smoothed, and the corners are carefully rolled up. The height of the rolled-up section should be greater than the future level of the concrete screed. If there is a desire and money can be purchased for waterproofing modern membranes.
If the room is planned to be used in the cold season, then it is necessary to insulate it. Most often an inexpensive, but high-quality material is used – a sheet of expanded polystyrene. The thickness of the sheet should be 5-10 cm. The material brand PSB-S-35 is specially designed for such works. Laying is performed over a layer of waterproofing. Little difficulty is the shape and size of the sheets. They must be laid tightly, and some sheets will have to be trimmed. In addition to sheet materials roll materials are also suitable. Any thermal insulator should be covered with a film from above.
How to concretize the floor in the garage
For pouring, a metal mesh is laid on the surface as reinforcement. Before starting the work, a marking is carried out – pegs are hammered in, and the desired height of the screed is indicated on them. The finished mortar is poured and leveled with a special metal smoothing tool. The work can be carried out for two hours, then the finished mortar will begin to set. If a pit is planned, a ramp is laid in its place. The slope should be towards the pit. This is necessary to collect spilled liquids, so that the water does not remain on the surface. To create a warmer base, the composition of the concrete should include expanded clay or pumice. The mortar is prepared with cement and depends on the grade of cement purchased. If M400 is chosen, then 1 to 3 is applied. You can also use ready-made dry mixes like M150.
